The Pondering…

The Pondering by Cody Poston

Kira is a strange creature.

I watched her today stare at the computer screen for fifteen minutes. I started timing it around the five-minute mark, so I'm estimating, but fifteen minutes feels right.

I asked her what she was doing.

"Mmmm?"

I said, honey, you're staring.

"Mmmm?"

So I watched. And watched. Like that Marlin Perkins guy on Wild Kingdom, just observing the creature in her natural habitat.

She finally clicked something. Then bounced, actually bounced, happily, and started typing again. Like someone had just turned her back on.

I asked again. What were you doing?

"I bought a bracelet. I was trying to figure out which color. They had a cute purple one, a turquoise one, and a white one."

I said, calmly, very calmly, FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES?

"Well the colors were going to clash with my skirt. But I figured out I'll just switch the skirt for the skorts. Bingo. Done."

Then she looked at me.

"What were you doing?"

I was watching you ponder.

"Mmmm?"

She stopped typing then. Actually stopped. Turned around in the chair and looked at me the way you look at someone who just said something they think is clever.

"You watched me for fifteen minutes trying to figure out what I was doing."

Yes.

"And you couldn't figure it out."

...correct.

She snorted.

"You didn't have anything better to do?"

I was observing.

"CODY." She spun the chair fully around now. "I was making sure the bracelets wouldn't clash. That's WORK. You were just standing there watching me. Who wasn't working?"

I opened my mouth.

"Who WASN'T working, Cody."

She turned back to the screen and started typing again like the entire conversation had already been filed and archived.

So. I present to you, The Pondering. A Kira Lorne Planet Passion novel. Available someday. Maybe.
